NCCA and the USC Cebuano Studies Center launched House of Cards

       The newest addition to the USC Cebuano Studies Center Bunga series, House of Cards, by the late Austregelina Espina-Moore, edited and translated by Hope Sabanpan-Yu, under the sponsorship of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts was launched at the Metropolitan Cathedral Museum at 4:30 in the afternoon last July 20, 2013. 

       The editor, along with readers, was there to talk to the members of the public about the book and the late author, and advance copies were available to purchase at the event.

       Originally published as Balay nga Baraha, the novel saw publication as a weekly serial in the Bisaya magazine from August 22 until October 24, 1973, before it was translated into English and edited for publication by Dr. Hope Sabanpan-Yu of the USC Cebuano Studies Center.

       Austregelina Espina-Moore, a multi-awarded Cebuana author, had written eleven novels in Cebuano which were all serialized in the Bisaya; this being the third in the translation series project of CSC. Her awards included the Outstanding Achievement in the Field of English Literature from the Province of Cebu (1975), Pan Pacific Southeast Asian Association Award in the Field of the English Novel (1975), Magsusulat Award for Exemplary Contribution to Literature in Cebuano (1987), and the much-esteemed Thailand Southeast Asian Write Award presented by HRH Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn for her novel Heart of the Lotus in 1989. In 1992 she received both the Women in Travel Award in the Field of Literature and the Literary Award from the Mariano F. Manguerra Foundation.

       Her novel Inahan ni Mila was translated by Dr. Yu and was published as Mila’s Mother, by the NCCA in 2008. Dr. Yu had done the same for her other novel, Diin may punoan sa arbol which was published as Where a fire tree grows by the University of San Carlos Press in 2010.

       Hope Sabanpan-Yu is the author of Bridging Cultures: The Philippine Migrant Woman in the Works of Jessica Hagedorn, Fatima Lim-Wilson and Sophia Romero published by NCCA and Women’s Common Destiny: Maternal Representations in the Cebuano Serialized Fiction of Hilda Montaire and Austregelina Espina-Moore published by the University of the Philippines Press. She teaches literature at the University of San Carlos.
