Call for Applications: Subaybaktas Literary History Training Workshop 2015
For some decades now, there has been a rise in interest in regional writers and regional writing. Some writers have found a new reading audience after a period of cultural and historiographical neglect. However, knowledge of the works of regional writers varies greatly with the resources that are available to assess their historical significance. Because we know so little about how writers and their works were received in their own day, it is nearly impossible to estimate the importance they may have had. What roles did the writers play in their time, in the shaping of the literary field, and for later generations? What kind of audience read their works?
In order to answer these questions it is crucial to gain a view of the diverse discourses regional writers instigated or were involved in. The juxtaposition of regional literary production with the different categories of reception texts may document the “responses” to such questions. Such documenting is the main thrust of Subaybaktas to encourage scholars and researchers to work on their region’s literary histories.
The Subaybaktas project:
The Cebuano Studies Center’s Subaybaktas project makes it possible (but is not limited) to study the production and reception of regional writing and allow scholars and researchers to focus on various issues, for example:
• the creation of works and their writers,
• the role and influence of literary critics, editors, audience, etc.,
• the role played by institutions.
• the literary development in the region
• the use of novels and stories and essays
• the representation, mediation and promotion of new writing styles and techniques in
literature
Questions considered in this context are not limited to the traditional regional perspective, but can be followed across national and linguistic borders, thus accommodating a more complete view.
This project was conceived in order to illustrate the literary historical possibilities directly related to literary production and reception. The output will contain an outline of the research using the regional literature and investigating into the relationship, for instance:
Literary production focuses on authors – taken as individuals or as groups – and their ways of intervening in the literary field
Literary reception concentrates on the readers in the broadest sense: which attitudes were adopted by whom toward the writers’ works?
The workshop will be led by Dr. Resil B. Mojares, Professor Emeritus of the University of San Carlos and Hope Sabanpan Yu, Director of the USC Cebuano Studies Center. Guest faculty will be announced closer to the time of the seminar.
The workshop will be of interest to scholars and researchers interested in the fields of literary history and other associated fields. A limited amount of financial aid will be available. Preference for assistance will be given to those with a track record in writing literary criticism and history.
Guidelines for Presentation Proposals
The workshop program consists of keynote lectures, presentations and panel discussions. If you are interested in presenting at the workshop, please submit an abstract on or before 15 April 2015. Please expect to be presenting to a panel of literary historians including academic participants. Presenters of accepted abstracts are asked to speak 20 minutes, followed by a discussion with the panel and the audience with the supervision of a session chair.

Notification of acceptance:
Since it may not be possible to include all submissions, the organizing committee will make a selection. You will be notified if the paper is accepted by 10 May 2015.
