Kumbira: A literary feast of Cebuano food
The Cebuano Studies Center in cooperation with the Mamugnaong Anak sa Dagang, Inc. (MAD), Inotherwords Inc. (IOW) and the Literary and Cultural Studies Section of the USC Department of Communications, Linguistics and Literature will conduct the activity entitled “Kumbira: A literary feast of Cebuano food” on September 24-25, 2021 online via Zoom. This is under the sponsorship of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts Literary Committee.
The webinar aims to bring a fascinating portrait of the role of food in literature and life. The speakers use their own observations, as well as a variety of research, experience and examples from to weave a rich yarn of the impact food really has. Explaining that food is tangled in every human emotion, they will showcase how food is an expression of the Cebuano personality. Each module lecture/presentation will be followed by a writing session by the participants.
Food, like love, is a powerful conjurer of memories. The mention of a certain dish activates not only images in the brain but opens a whole range of emotions and sensory memory. The mention of lechon or humba will not only make a Cebuano remember fiestas where the lechon takes center stage in the middle of the table surrounded with other festive fare. The resource speakers for the two-day activity are Ms. Haidee Emmie Palapar, Mr. Clyde Inso Chan and Ms. Cindy Velasquez.
The activity is open to the public (especially teachers and students) and will be on a first-come first-served basis. Please register https://bit.ly/kumbira2021 for your slot or call (32) 2300100 local 308 for more information
