“The Cine Anuncio in the 1910s: A Design History”

Abstract:
This study looks into the evolution of the anuncio or newspaper advertising for movie houses in Cebu as reflected in Nueva Fuerza from 1915 to 1919. It focuses on how the anuncio of the period reflects the transition from a lingering Spanish influence towards an Americanized colonial culture brought about partly by the growing dominance of Hollywood in the global and local film markets. The study also analyzes the design of the anuncio, how it indicates developments in printing technology, typography, and stylistic trends in graphic design.
